Psychotherapy

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a talking therapy that is used to help people with a wide range of emotional and psychological issues. A psychotherapist is a trained professional who provides a safe environment for you to talk and will help improve your mental health.

What is mental health?

We all have mental health, in the same way that we all have physical health. And just as we need to look after and maintain our physical health, so too with our mental health. As we go through life, we all have emotional ups and downs and generally we are able to manage this. Sometimes however day-to-day stress, feels like it is getting on top of us. Depression and Anxiety are mental health conditions. It is your psychological well-being that a Psychotherapist will be able to help you with.

What else can Psychotherapy help me with?

There are many aspects of emotional health that a psychotherapist can help with. These include, but are not limited to; Sex and sexuality issues, Depression, Addiction, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), Stress, Relationship issues, Anxiety, Self-esteem issues, Emotional Trauma, Bereavement, Loss of a job, Eating disorders.

Gaining an isight into your own mind is also a very powerful form of self-development. So you don’t have to have any particular psychological issue to see a Psychotherapist. It can help to have someone to talk to in order to facilitate expressing how you are felling.

What does a Psychotherapist do?

A Psychotherapist is trained to listen to you and enable you to have a deeper insight into the issues that may be troubling you. There are many different methods and schools of though in Psychotherapy and each individual therapist will have their own style. Some of the techniques that psychotherapist use include, role playing, visualisations or dream interpretation. Some psychotherapists also train in more specialised methods such as dance therapy, art therapy or therapy using hypnosis. The different methods and techniques will suit some people more than others. Research has shown that there is not one method or school of therapy that is the best, the most important factor in the success of the therapy is the quality of relationships between therapist and client. So it is really important to find a therapist who feels right for you.
